While the term (anti-)imperialism is often associated with the Cold War era, in recent decades we have witnessed direct Western military intervention in Serbia, Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya, and hear the war drums beating in places like Venezuela, Eastern Europe and North Korea. During these interventions, many Western-left political tendencies tried to balance their resentment towards Western national-corporate war machines with a disdain for what has been portrayed as “dictatorial regimes of the Third World”. Meanwhile, mainstream corporate media continues to justify Western interventions while leaving out critical analysis of imperialism, and sometimes lying about the actions of national governments.

In the Netherlands, anti-imperialism was an essential feature not only of the Communist Party but also of historical figures like Anton de Kom, Otto Huiswoud and Poncke Princen and Nelson Mandela. However, since the waning of the anti-war movement, the rich tradition of anti-imperialism has disappeared. As if pacifists and the left activists have been afraid to be identified with non-democratic political forces in the Global South, the movements for emancipation and sustainability have kept silent while NGOs have called for Western military and economic intervention, no-fly zones and other measures curtailing the sovereignty of postcolonial countries.

From a decolonial perspective, international relations continue to be dominated by colonial- historical structures, where race is found to be the organizing principle of the world capitalist system. While capitalist economy can be seen as the impulse for imperialism, the inequalities and oppression experienced by much of humanity under imperialism continues to follow historical colonialism. The great leaders of 20th century liberation movements in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, together with the champions of civil rights in Europe and North America, all identified themselves as anti-imperialists. What would a critical anti-imperialism look like today, and how can it serve to foster solidarity among nations of the South and colonized people of the North?

The questions in the series are:

  • What are the local dynamics of the conflict?
  • What are foreign influences?
  • And how do these follow a historical pattern?

These are the sessions:

  • Session 1: Russia and Ukraine. Speakers: Chris de Ploeg and Sheher Khan
  • Session 2: Venezuela and Cuba: Antonio Carmona Baez and Angie Gonzales Fren
  • Session 3: Paneldiscussion wit comparative analysis: Chris de Ploeg, Sheher Khan, Antonio Carmona Baez and Angie Gonzales Fren

Vrijdag 27 oktober Amsterdam: (MIS)informed

Organisatie: IZI SolutionsNew Urban Collective en The Grapevine Enterprise.

Datum: vrijdag 27 oktober van 18.30-22.00 uur.

Plaats: Vrije Universiteit, Boelelaan 1105, Amsterdam.
